Jesus E. Batista
Managing Member -The Batista Law Group, PSC.
Mr. Batista is an attorney and financial advisor who specializes in situations of financial distress. Mr. Batista received his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, his MBA with a specialization in finance and economics from Loyola University in Chicago and his B.A. in finance from Marquette University. Mr. Batista is also a Certified Insolvency & Restructuring Advisor (successfully completed, pending certification). Mr. Batista is the founding Member of The Batista Law Group, PSC., a boutique bankruptcy and consumer law firm focused on middle market business bankruptcies as well as an active consumer law practice. Mr. Batista is also the founder of The Private Equity Firm, LLC., an advisory firm that provides financial and operational advise, as well as access to debt or equity funding, to business or entities in situations of financial distress.
As an attorney, Mr. Batista represents corporate and individual debtors facing financial distress whether through bankruptcy restructurings or out of bankruptcy workouts. Mr. Batista has been retained as lead Debtor’s Counsel in over 70 Chapter 11 cases and thousands of Chapter 13 and/or Chapter 7 cases. Prior to founding The Batista Law Group, PSC., Mr. Batista was a member of the financial restructuring group at the Chicago Office of Barnes and Thornburg, LLP. There, Mr. Batista represented commercial lenders and borrowers in connection with structured and securitized asset financings; loan restructurings; bankruptcy matters; and financial institutions in regulatory matters.
Prior to his legal practice, Mr. Batista was a vice-president of mortgage lending at North Shore Trust & Savings; there Mr. Batista created, managed and directed North Shore’s wholly owned mortgage lending subsidiary, North Shore Lending Group. In addition, Mr. Batista formerly served as President of Kasa Development, a real estate development and advisory services firm.
Mr. Batista is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of Illinois, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and the District Court of Puerto Rico. Publications, articles and other writings Include: Coauthored, American Bankruptcy Institute Preference Handbook – 2005 Edition. The ABI Preference Handbook covers the elements of a bankruptcy preference as well as the statutory exceptions and defenses; Co-authored Are All Creditor “Animals Equal”? Article has been cited for its authoritative value by multiple bankruptcy courts; Co-authored a Chapter on Fundamentals of Bankruptcy Law. William Rivera-Vélez
Attorney
Mr. Rivera-Vélez is an attorney admitted into the legal practice in the Courts of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and at the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Mr. Rivera-Vélez is also admitted as a Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Mr. Rivera-Vélez received his J.D. from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and his B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico. He focuses his practice on bankruptcy, consumer law and foreclosure in Federal and State Courts.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Rivera-Vélez worked as an attorney in the litigation department of various local firms in the areas of civil and commercial litigation in Federal and State Courts. Mr. Rivera-Vélez has acted as lead or co-counsel in multiple civil and commercial litigation cases including antitrust, insurance, contract disputes, personal injury, debt collection and foreclosure.
Alfredo D. Frontera Luciano
Attorney
Mr. Alfredo D. Frontera Luciano is an Associate at The Batista Law Group where he works in the practice area of bankruptcy and consumer law protection. In the area of bankruptcy, Mr. Frontera has assisted in the drafting and filing of complex business and individual Chapter 11 cases; including cases under Sub-Chapter V of the Code, as well as consumer Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 cases. Mr. Frontera consumer law practice focuses in areas of the Federal Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Truth in Lending Act, and the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act to protect clients from wrongful and deceitful collection practices from creditors, banks, lenders, and/or debt collectors.
Prior to his practice at The Batista Law Group, Mr. Frontera worked at various Puerto Rico civil focused law firms where he handled complex cases in the areas of contract, mortgage, and real estate law. He also assisted in multiple homeowner’s insurance cases against insurers for breach of contract and property damages due to Hurricane Maria. Mr. Frontera obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the Faculty of Law of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Mr. Frontera also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Prior to his legal work experience, Mr. Frontera interned as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Aileen Navas Auger in the Judicial Center of San Juan. Outside the work area, Mr. Frontera has also served as pro-bono volunteer at Clínica Legal de la Comunidad. Attorney Frontera is admitted to practice law in the Courts of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Carlos A. Ortiz Morales
Attorney
Mr. Ortiz is an Off-Counsel at The Batista Law Group, PSC. and serves as Special Litigation Counsel in the Firm’s Consumer Law Practice. A skilled and dynamic trial lawyer, Mr. Ortiz has over 45 years of civil litigation experience and has tried hundreds of jury trials in federal and state court. At The Batista Law Group, Mr. Ortiz focuses his practice on consumer financial protection litigation such as debt collection harassment and credit reporting errors. Attorney Ortiz litigates consumer injury cases on an individual basis as well as class actions.
Mr. Ortiz’ litigation practice is extensive. Prior to joining The Batista Law Group, Mr. Ortiz successfully tried and obtained multi-million-dollar verdicts for his clients in medical malpractice and wrongful death matters. In addition to his private practice experience, Attorney Ortiz has accumulated extensive public sector experience having served as Under Secretary of State – Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; Special Public Policy Advisor – Mayor of San Juan; as well as Special Counsel of Financial Corruption – Senate of Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Mr. Ortiz is licensed to practice law in the Courts of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, and the United States First Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Ortiz obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico – School of Law.
